Mobile broadband is the name used to describe various types of wireless, high-speed internet access through a portable modem, telephone or other device. Various network standards may be used, such as GPRS, 3G, WiMAX and some portable satellite-based systems.

Mobile Broadband - Impact on Education

Background

iphone-parallels.jpgMobile Broadbands have been unavailable to us in the past and are a cheaper alternative for laptops and computers. These phones are different to the normal ones we have used. These phones with the ability to go on the internet will be popularized through the world in the time frame of 3-4 years. In New Zealand however it may take a bit longer because the prices are too high and phones are monopolised by Telecom and Vodafone. We have worked on a website to present our information of how mobile broadbands could affect education we have researched in the guide of the Horizon report and here is the link to our website (http://mobile-broadband-horizon.synthasite.com/)

Our plan - some areas how mobile broadband could affect in most areas of education and other areas

· All educating areas:
o Set up a discussion chat room so people can use their phones to txt into the chat room and have a debate or discussion
o Help students from home to get involved since the broadband the world wide.
o Connect with famous people or companies around the world to discuss with us about the topic without them coming to New Zealand and giving a lecture…
o Helps you memorize information if you see it a lot. You can use it as wallpaper or skin.
o Film the whole lesson in video so if the teacher is not there students can txt them and talk to the teacher about the class and homework. And if students are away they can catch-up by searching the videos and watch them later. The videos are good for revision for exams too.

· Social Studies
o Example: the article of the Onehunga High teacher- Nathan Kerr, who used Mobile phones in the class room, won a world level prize. The students really liked it… Link , 2The lesson was to Demonstrate a knowledge of New Zealand as a tourist destination Level 3 – Credit 8 (Unit Standard 18212 version 1); and Demonstrate knowledge of tourist destinations within New Zealand Level 2 Credit 2 (Unit 18236 version 1) in five weeks.
o We could use the mobile phone to teach Geography because it can use satellite images around the world instantly and you can see the landscapes.
o Current affairs quiz – instant news, don’t need to spend one hour each day at the same time to watch news. The phone is portable unlike computer and TV and you can read the highlights of the news.

o Physics
§ Scientific equations
o Chemistry
§ Ph graph
§ Periodic graph
§ Bio molecule 3D sample
§ Chemical reactions recorded and sowed through phone so you can keep up with class work. Less danger.
o Biology
§ Classification
§ Animal pictures(diagrams-parts of body e.t.c)
§ Skeletal diagrams
§ X-ray ability (camera) on phone to instantly see through your hand/body etc…

·

o
Instant calculator, not as heavy
o Information storage
o Instant search
o Graphical information(graph, mathematical-functions)
o Pi
o Mathematical equations
o 3D shapes for geometry

· Religious Studies
o Religion and worship, lifestyle in countries - info resources
o Interviews - buddhist monk in China
·
Music
o Download music from phones
o Inspirational
o Instant CD player or video player 4 performance

·
Art and Leisure

o Technical programmes online
o 4D movies
o Abstract art
o Online Galleries
o Portable and send-able camera
o Using mobile’s to connect with ideas worldwide for artist

How mobile broadband affects governments and politicians:

· Voting online with phone or txtk_img04.png

Other areas:
· Radio news
· Diary
· Calendar
· Timetable
· Important notes
· Alarm

How Mobile broadband affects junior and elementary schooling:

It doesn't affect them that much since it is unsafe for them to use the internet at a young age but the children who are years 5 and 6 may use it appropriately so they can use it for some educational interactive games and crosswords. And considering that their parents wouldn't really want to buy the younger kids a phone because they are not very responsible and may lose such an expensive and important tool. so they may use their parents phones if they are at home to connect to school and they could use a laptop instead.

Some major problems with Mobile Broadband in New Zealand:
· The broadband now are too expensive, so not everyone can get one.
· The broadband are very limited to only one country.
· Broadband should not be limited to one company to monopolise the whole economy platform then the prices could be high since like telecom and Vodafone who monopolise New Zealand and it’s not owned by the (well Vodafone isn’t) country’s so we just can’t hold the prices down.
· Radiation can affect health
· And eyesight
· Speed of broadband (loading and buffer)
· Time is an issue(time to master the technology)
· Cheat
· Younger teachers, modern mind would normally have a higher chance in going with the cell phone teaching idea unlike older generations, their minds are less broad.

What the future may look like with Mobile Broadband

Flash drive used to go on the internet and store information

We think the future with Mobile Broadbands will be that they will be used in a wide variety in many subjects (some areas listed above). But, mobile broadbands have many problems and are facing many critical challenges which we may not be able to change. These are the price and the monopolising of the cellphone platform by Telecom and Vodafone which even the government cannot control.

Mobile broadbands are amongst the emerging technologies in 3-4 years. We think now that it could be faster since the report we are studying is 2008 and one year has already passed. But it may also be slower because schools are blocking students from using cellp

hones and mobile phones in schools so it is a matter of time for people to get use to the new mobile technology and learn how to use it.

We think mobile broadband could have many good points as well as bad points; these are that they are cheaper than laptops and could be used in the same way as laptops. They are also very light.
In the future Mobiles are probably designed to be eco-friendly so people might discard laptops and use mobiles instead.
Even though moblies have a very small screen they may be foldable and could have a larger screen. Mobile Boradband could not just be phones. They could just be a portable flash drive that stores the hard drive and just needs a computer to plug into to work everything off the flash drive. This makes information portable so we just need a stable computer to work it and no longer need computers to store our full information.

Current example - article analysis

Taken from aritcle from Newswire: //http://www.newswiretoday.com/news/44951///

Outline:
What this article mainly says is that mobiles with broadband are sold more widely and faster than fixed internet modems. Form 2008 we see that Mobile broadbands have increased by 40% and may only be the start of the new technology so the sales may be increasing far more.
Broadband expert Rob Webber believes that
“the convenience of being able to access social networking sites like Facebook, visit shopping sites or read the news on the beach, the train or even the pub will see mobile broadband overtake fixed broadband sales within 3 years.”

Our thoughts:
So we see that the emerging technology is coming through very fast even though it is amongst a 3-4 year range. And this article shows that mobile broadbands would be the technology of communications for the future and it would overtake un-portable modems when the prices get lower and are more popularised. We also agree with how Webber said that there was a danger of over downloading since the technology now hasn't fully developed and may not be as large to store information, so web useres should watch out on how much memory they use to avoid confusion in the 'bill'.
